GATE 2014: Formula to calculate GATE score

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is scheduled to be held from February 1 to March 2. The results for the same are expected to be declared on March 28. GATE exams are computer-based online tests.

And, many students are confused about how to find out the GATE scores.

Calculation of GATE scores for all papers will be done based on the following formula:

GATE score= Sq + (St - Sq) [(M - Mq)/ (Mt- Mq)]

In the above formula,
M = marks obtained by the candidate
Mq= qualifying marks for general category candidate
Mt= is the mean of marks of top 10 of the candidates who appeared in the paper
Sq= 350
St= 900

The GATE scores are used for admission to post graduate courses in technology at various institutes including the IITs, CUSAT (Cochin University of Science and Technology) and a few institutes in Singapore and Germany. Public sector companies such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre use GATE scores for hiring.

Around 12 lakh candidates registered for GATE 2013 with 9, 84, 855 candidates appearing for the exam and 1, 36, 699 clearing the GATE 2013.

GATE 2014 is being organised by IIT Kharagpur.

Also, the examination for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers is being held in multi-sessions. Hence, for these papers, a suitable normalisation is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions.
