No common counselling round for IITs, NITs this year

MUMBAI: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) will not have a common counselling round this year. In a meeting held on February 5, the ministry of human resources development decided to have the process similar to that of last year's, putting to rest the confusion over common counselling round for admission to the centrally-funded technical institutes.

The meeting was attended by representatives from IITs, NITs, CBSE, which conducts JEE (main), and the ministry.

"It has been decided that this year none of the processes will be disturbed. NITs will have their own counselling round, while IITs will conduct theirs. The common round might be implemented from next year after a feasibility study," said a senior official.

Ashok Thakur, secretary, department of higher education, MHRD, had earlier said ministry officials were keen on having a common counselling round as it would resolve the issue of seats going vacant in the premier institutes and also other state engineering colleges.

An official claimed that there are several cases of students who get seats in IITs (a brand) but not in popular courses, and they also get a seat in NIT in a coveted course. "These indecisive students hold on to both seats for a long time give up one only in the end, thus leaving vacant seats. Such students hold on to seats in other engineering colleges too. According to MHRD, a common counselling round would help resolve the issue," said the official.

But the IITs were opposed to the idea and believed that it was too late to start on the common counselling round process at this point of time. "IITs were already working on their schedule and any new development would have disturbed their process. If any agency had to conduct the counselling, the work has to begin at least six months in advance," said an IIT professor.

One of the professors even pointed out to the technical glitch that happened during the NITs' admission last year and said that they would not like to jeopardize their process too.
