Common Entrance Test 2014 last moment preparation ideas and other important details

With less than two months left for the CAT  2014 exam, all the examination aspirants might be busy revising those several books and practice papers, which they might have compiled for the preparation purpose. Excitement, anxiety and hope are what might be hovering around their heads on a regular basis.
CAT, which stands for the Common Admission Test, is an aptitude test for shortlisting prospective management students for admissions to any of the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) and is one of the most popular entrance examinations for any graduate institute.
The CAT paper pattern undergoes change almost every year. To make the preparation convenient for the CAT 2014 aspirants, we have tried to highlight few last moment tips and the change in paper conduction pattern.

What are the areas which the paper covers?

Questions are framed from five broad areas namely - Verbal ability and reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative skills, data interpretation and logical reasoning. All the questions would be of multiple-choice type with optional answer choices. The new change is that the test duration would be of 170 minutes this year as compared to last year's 140 minutes. Also, the time duration of the examination has been increased by 30 more minutes. This has also called for an increase in the number of questions that the paper would contain.
  1. Another change in pattern is that earlier candidates were supposed to attempt questions from sections in serial wise order, but now they have the liberty to attempt any section first. This will help them complete the paper on the basis of time allocated by themselves to different sections.
  2. Coaching is a must - Even if you have been a topper throughout your school, there are still some concepts, which you could get cleared only with coaching. Famous coaching institutes like TIME, IMS, Career Launcher etc thoroughly brush up your concepts and problem-solving skills and also provide you with mock test papers to acquainted you with previous CAT examination papers.
  3. Practice is the key to perfection - Mathematics is a topic most dread. You do not need extra intelligent mathematical skills to crack the CAT paper. It's just that your concepts need to be clear and you need to practice as much as possible to be able to clear the paper.
  4. Keep a track of time - Do not ponder long on any question for a long duration. If you encounter a tricky question, which you might feel difficult to solve, just move on to the rest of the questions and when you're done with all of them, return to the untouched questions and try to solve them calmly.
  5. Do not stress yourself on the last day. As the next day would be crucial for you, stay in a peaceful and stress-free environment a day before the examination. Go out with friends, relax with your family and just maintain your mental calm. No need to start revising back all the chapters the last day, because if you couldn't do that throughout the year, then just a single day of revision won't yield anything good.
  6. Get acquainted with your strengths and weaknesses as this can help you allocate sufficient time for the weak areas and work on them to make it as good as your strong areas.
The examination would be conducted across 99 cities in four sessions at 354 examination centers.
