UGC nod for CBSE's 13 vocational courses

There is good news for CBSE students who have opted for vocational courses in std XI and XII, as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has given nod to 13 such courses. Recognition by UGC of these courses is a big victory for CBSE, as now universities will try to introduce these at the undergraduate level.

UGC's deputy secretary, Shakeel Ahmad has written to all affiliated universities in the country asking that CBSE's initiative be encouraged and courses be introduced at the undergraduate level. Ahmad wrote to the universities asking, "it is imperative that these subjects find a reflection in the subjects already being offered at the graduate level in various educational institutes. It is important that appropriate consideration may be accorded while admitting students to the undergraduate courses at the college/university level. Accordingly, all universities are requested to take appropriate action for recognition of these new subjects for the purpose of admission of students in degree programmes".

AFMC to conduct admission interviews from June 25

:PUNE: Over 47,000 medical aspirants across the country have shown their preference for the 125 MBBS seats at the coveted Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune through the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) this year.

"The interview process for admissions will commence from June 25 and continue till July 12," AFMC dean and deputy commandant Maj Gen Velu Nair said on Wednesday. Following a merit-based screening process, the AFMC usually calls 1,500-odd candidates for the interview and psychological test process.

This year, the AFMC had to fall back on the AIPMT, which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, after the Supreme Court struck down the Medical Council of India's single entrance test scheme called the NEET-UG, last year.

Until 2012-13, AFMC was conducting its own all-India entrance test. It decided to join the NEET scheme from 2013-14 for admissions to both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

"Last year, admissions at the AFMC closed at 99.26 percentile. In terms of all India ranking, the admissions closed at 4,700 rank," Nair said. However, this process was based on the NEET-UG scheme. This year too, the candidates had to specify in their AIPMT forms about their preference for the AFMC.

Director and commandant of AFMC Vice Admiral Sushil Kumar ruled out the likelihood of any enhancement in the number of MBBS seats in the college. "As of now, our intake is 125 seats and the same is in tune with the availability of faculty," he said.

Kumar said, "Any increase in the number of seats will have to be seen in context with the availability of faculty. As of now, our faculty position is tight. The substantial hike, effected last year, in the exit bond for the candidates who opt out of service in the armed forces after their postgraduate studies at the AFMC, is expected to provide us more faculty in future."

According to Nair, there are total six hospitals of the Armed Forces Medical Services at Pune, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi and Lucknow for facilitating postgraduate studies and research. The faculty has to be distributed in these hospitals.
