One more IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) has been proposed by the Government of India to establish in Karnataka. Along with the IIT, two new IIMs are also proposed by Finance Minister of India while presenting the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha. The location for the IIT is not finalised yet but the possible locations to set up the institute include Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Hassan, Raichur and Ballari. The state government is yet to finalize the location and send recommendation to the Central government.
Karnataka can be considered as the knowledge capital of India. The state is already a home to very eminent institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM) at Bengaluru and National Institute of Technology at Surathkal in Mangaluru.
According to rules, an IIT requires at least 500 acres. An expert committee has been constituted by the Central Government to study the possibility of establishing IIT in a lesser area. The committee is yet to submit its recommendations to the government.
Along with an IIT in Karnatka, a postgraduate institute of horticulture research and education is proposed in Amritsar and proposal to upgrade the already established National Institute of Speech and Hearing into a University for Disability Studies and Rehabilitation is also discussed in the Union Budget.
Admission in IITs will be granted through properly planned procedure. Candidate’s score in Class XII, JEE Main and JEE Advanced are calculated through normalisation method to prepare merit list. Candidates will be able to take admission in IITs only after qualifying the JEE Advanced exam.
